Fence Cost Calculator
Estimate fence cost per linear foot for wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum, or composite, including posts, gates, and install.
How the calculation works
Fence pricing is almost always quoted per linear foot plus gates. Height, material, and whether a crew sets posts in concrete are the three biggest levers. Corner and end posts are heavier than line posts; this tool uses 8 ft on-center as the usual residential layout.
Wood is the value pick but needs stain. Vinyl and composite cost more and skip painting. Chain link is the cheapest security fence. HOA and permit rules often cap height at 6 ft in the backyard and 4 ft in the front.

Worked example
120 ft of 6 ft wood fence with one gate, pro installed, is typically several thousand dollars once panels, posts, and labor are included.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a fence cost per foot?
Materials only: wood ~$8–$16, vinyl ~$20–$35, chain link ~$6–$12. Installed prices are often double that.
How many posts do I need?
A post every 8 feet is standard, plus extras at corners and gates. Length ÷ 8 + 1 is the usual line-post count.
Does this include removal of an old fence?
No. Tear-out is often $3–$8 per foot extra. Add a dumpster if you have a long run.
Wood vs vinyl?
Wood is cheaper and customizable. Vinyl costs more, lasts longer without paint, and can look stark in some yards.
Are gates extra?
Yes. A single walk gate is often $200–$500 installed; double drive gates cost more.
