Paver Calculator
Calculate patio or driveway pavers from surface size, paver dimensions, joint spacing, and waste. Optional pallet or box count and cost.
How to use this paver calculator
Paver count is a grid, like tile. Enter the actual paver face and the joint you will sand. Ten percent waste covers cuts and a future repair bundle; 15% if you are running a diagonal or circle kit. After you know the count, size the gravel base and sand bed with the Gravel and Sand calculators.
Concrete pavers, brick, and porcelain outdoor tile all use this math. Permeable pavers with wide joints still work — put the true joint width in. Edge restraint and polymeric sand are extra line items.
Formula
Worked example
A 16×12 ft patio, 8×4 in pavers, ⅛ in joints: 192/8.125 ≈ 24 columns, 144/4.125 ≈ 35 rows = 840 pieces. 10% waste → 924 pavers.

Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a 12×12 patio?
Depends on paver size. 6×6 pavers are 4 per sq ft before joints; 8×4 rectangular pavers are closer to 4.5 per sq ft. Use this grid math rather than a round “4 per foot” rule.
What waste percent for pavers?
10% rectangular, 15% herringbone or circles.
Do I need sand and gravel too?
Yes. Typically 4–6 in of compacted gravel and about 1 in of bedding sand. Open those calculators next.
How many pavers on a pallet?
Printed on the pallet tag — often 80–120 pieces. Enter it to see pallets to order.
Can I mix paver sizes?
This tool is one size. For a pattern, calculate each size as a percentage of area or run two estimates.
