Gravel Calculator
Estimate gravel cubic yards and tons from length, width, depth, and rock type. Optional price per ton for pads, paths, and driveways.
How to use this gravel calculator
Yards sell gravel by the ton, not the scoop. Convert your rectangle to cubic yards, then multiply by a typical density: crushed stone around 1.4 tons per yard, pea gravel a little lighter. Four inches is a common path or patio base; driveways want 4–6 inches of angular rock that locks together.
This gravel calculator is the general volume tool. If you are specifically pricing a driveway including a typical vehicle depth, the Gravel Driveway Calculator uses the same math with driveway-oriented help text. Compact in lifts on soft clay and consider fabric under the stone.
Formula
Worked example
A 40×12 ft pad, 4 in of crushed stone: 40×12×(4/12) ÷ 27 = 5.93 cu yd ≈ 8.3 tons.

Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need?
Length × width × depth (feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Multiply by ~1.4 for tons of crushed stone.
How many tons in a cubic yard of gravel?
Usually 1.2–1.5 tons depending on rock, moisture, and compaction.
How deep should gravel be?
Walkways 2–3 in. Patios 4 in over a base. Driveways 4–6 in of crushed stone.
Pea gravel or crushed stone?
Crushed stone for driving and a stable patio base. Pea gravel for looks and paths — it migrates on slopes.
Does this include delivery?
Cost is material only. Quarries often have a 5–10 ton delivery minimum.
