How the calculation works

Local movers bill time: more bedrooms, more hours and more backs. Long-distance quotes care about weight and miles. Stairs, long carries, and last-minute weekend dates are the usual extras. This moving cost calculator is a planning range, not a binding bid.

Pack yourself to save the most. Full packing is worth it if you are short on time. Get 2–3 in-home or video estimates; the low bid is not always the safe one. Binding not-to-exceed quotes protect you on interstate moves.

Formula

Local (≤50 mi): labor = hours × movers × $58, plus truck and per-mile after 15 miles. Long distance: shipment weight × (0.28 + miles/2800). Packing is a per-pound add. Stairs add a flight fee.

Worked example

A 3-bedroom local move of 25 miles with partial packing and one flight of stairs is typically a four-figure job for a three-person crew.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move locally?

Studios often $400–$900. 3-bedroom homes often $1,200–$3,000 depending on stairs, distance, and season.

What about a 1,000-mile move?

Expect several thousand dollars for a 3-bedroom, driven by weight. Get a visual estimate.

Do stairs cost extra?

Usually. Elevators and long walks from the truck also add. We add a per-flight allowance.

Is packing worth it?

Partial packing (kitchen and art) is the usual compromise. Full packing can add 15–25%.

Hourly or flat rate?

Local is hourly. Interstate is usually a weight-and-distance tariff or a binding quote.
