How to use this overtime calculator

Most U.S. non-exempt employees get 1.5× after 40 hours in a workweek (FLSA). Some states, notably California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours and double-time after 12. This overtime calculator lets you switch the rule so you are not mixing them up. It is hours you already know per day—not punches.

Formula

Weekly-40: OT = max(0, week − 40). Daily-8: each day regular ≤8, OT 8–12, DT >12. Both: apply daily first, then convert regular hours above 40 into OT.

Worked example

Five 10-hour days: weekly-40 → 40 regular + 10 OT. Daily-8 → 40 regular + 10 OT as well. Five 13-hour days on daily-8 also create double-time after 12.

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime after 40 or after 8?

Federal law is 40 in the workweek. Daily-8 is a state/contract rule. Pick the rule that matches your job.

What is double time?

Often 2× wage after 12 hours in a day where daily OT applies. Set the DT multiplier if your policy differs.

Does this include weekly AND daily?

Use “Both.” Daily OT/DT is taken first; leftover regular hours over 40 become weekly OT.
